Melksham 2nds 2 Frome 3rds 0Frome ladies 3rd team played their first game after the Christmas break when snowy weather conditions had cancelled the previous weeks away game, against North Wilts. Frome 3rds were eager to play Melksham second team and try to get their new year off with a win
The Melksham team started very strong and attacked Frome’s defence straight away and it wasn't long before they were awarded a penalty corner. Melksham made their mark within the first 10 minutes by scoring a goal from that corner, Frome tried to push forward with a great move on the left wing by Tilly Marsh into the middle of the pitch, Lucy Townsend passed the ball forward only for Melksham to win the ball back. Melksham then headed straight towards Frome’s goal down the left side of the pitch, the ball was hit towards Frome’s circle and a deflected ball rolled into the path of one of their forwards who struck the ball into the back of the goal for their second before half time. Although the forwards, Becky Meecham, Helen Keniston and Becky Godfrey were eager to play the ball up the pitch, the Melksham defence were too strong and only a few goal attempts were played. Frome stayed strong and were determined not to let Melksham score again, they rallied around and worked hard as a team chasing down the ball and getting in some timely interceptions, Frome played a lovely ball up the pitch which only needed a touch to divert it into the Melksham goal, but Frome’s forwards just couldn't get that connection, and that was their last attempt on goal. Frome’s defence consistently challenged the Melksham team who repeatedly attacked the scoring area and with great persistence of defender and player of the match Lucy Townsend Frome 3rds prevented any further goals. Goalkeeper Jo Payne was on top form the whole match taking some hard body hits and making flying dives. Sadly the enthusiasm alone just didn’t quite cut it and disappointingly Melksham 2nds took home with them a 2 nil win.
